NAVIGATE YOUR NPI APPLICATION PATH WITH EASE

Remember:  Small health plans and large health plans have different due dates.

Don't let those National Provider Identifier (NPI) deadlines slip by. Instead of memorizing all the due dates, post this timeline in your office for a quick glance that will save you added stress and hassle in the long run. Spot These Key Dates and Deadlines • Healthcare providers can currently apply for their NPIs. This process began May 23, 2005.

• Although providers have had NPI numbers issued, Medicare cannot process claims with only an NPI until Oct. 2, 2006.

• From Jan. 3, 2006 through Oct. 1, 2006, Medicare will recognize an existing legacy number or an NPI on claims. But the claim MUST have an existing legacy Medicare number.

• Beginning Oct. 2, 2006 through May 22, 2007, Medicare will accept claims with an existing legacy number and/or an NPI. The hope is that providers will be able to successfully test systems during this time.

• May 23, 2007 Medicare's systems will only accept an NPI.

• The compliance date for all covered entities is May 23, 2007, except for small health plans, which have until May 23, 2008 to comply. Source: Jill Young, Young Medical Consulting, East Lansing, MI.
