Billing:

RN, LPN G Codes For Hospice Won't Be Out For A While

Consult an imminent transmittal for other payment reform billing details.

Hospices have a lot to do to get up to speed with new billing rules that will take effect Jan. 1, but they’ll have to wait a bit longer to cover all the details.

Why? The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services hoped to have billing instructions for hospice payment reform issued shortly after the 2016 final rule came out. “We hit a snag and could not issue them,” explained CMS’s Wil Gehne in the Aug. 12 Open Door Forum for home care and hospice providers.

However, in the forum Gehne said CMS would issue the transmittal Fri. Aug. 14 as CR 9201.

Still waiting: An important component will be missing from the transmittal, though. The G codes for RNs and LPNs, required for determining Service Intensity Add-on payments in the last seven days of life, can’t be issued via transmittal, Gehne noted. They will come out with the next HCPCS quarterly update, some time after Oct. 1. v

Note: CMS will issue the transmittal at www.cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Guidance/Transmittals/2015-Transmittals.html.
