With data breach woes in the news, you may be wondering what the feds are doing about it. A new report offers insight on a new department and the future of cybersecurity.
Nuts and bolts: Since the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 established the Office of the National Cyber Director in January 2021, much work has been done to get the new post and department running, according to the September 2022 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report “Cybersecurity: Kick-Starting the Office of the National Cyber Director.” In fact, the Senate confirmed the post in June 2021 and three separate pieces of legislation allocated funds and mandated provisions for the office, GAO says. Staff have been hired, a vision has been outlined, and strategies for addressing the national cybersecurity crisis are in development.
