A new manual has been published that aims at making assisted living facilities' HIPAA compliance problems vanish. The National Center for Assisted Living said in a June 18 release that it has published a manual to aid facilities' compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's regulations on privacy issues. The manual aims to provide assisted living facilities with a "practical guide to swiftly achieve compliance" with HIPAA's privacy rule; it will address assisted living facilities' operational issues relative to its residents and privacy issues, NCAL said in the release. NCAL says facilities can modify the manual's "sample implementation guidelines" to achieve compliance with the privacy rule. The manual, which NCAL claims is user-friendly, is divided into 28 appendices on topics including Use and Disclosure of Health Information Policy, Consent, Authorizations, Complaints and Penalties.
