New AMA Study Highlights Importance of Cybersecurity

Research from the nation's top physicians' group suggests that cyber attacks are more common than you think in healthcare.

A joint study from the American Medical Association (AMA) and Accenture found that four out of five physicians had been the victims of a cyber attack, which accounted for about 83 percent of doctors, suggested the AMA release on the research.

"New research shows that most physicians think that securely exchanging electronic data is important to improve healthcare," said David O. Barbe, MD, MHA, president of the AMA. "More support from the government, technology and medical sectors would help physicians with a proactive cybersecurity defense to better ensure the availability, confidentiality and integrity of healthcare data."

Details: Over 1,300 physicians were interviewed about their cyber experiences and in what direction they think healthcare should take in addressing these rising concerns. The results concluded that the majority of the crimes were caused by phishing with viruses coming in second, noted the report.
