You have a new CPT® code for the Zenker’s diverticulum treatment beginning Jan. 1, and you’ll have a new diagnosis code for the condition when ICD-10 goes into effect on Oct. 1, 2015.

530.6 Changes to K22.5

Although neither code set uses the terminology “Zenker’s diverticulum,” you can expect a direct crosswalk for the condition when ICD-10 goes into effect. 

Here are the codes — now and in the future — that you need to know:

• 530.6 — Diverticulum of esophagus acquired
  
• K22.5 — Diverticulum of esophagus, acquired.
  

Congenital is different: For congenital esophageal diverticulum, you should report 750.4 (Other specified congenital anomalies of esophagus) under ICD-9. On Oct. 1, 2015 you’ll need to report the condition as Q39.6 (Congenital diverticulum of esophagus).
