Cut the Guesswork From This Gastrostomy Tubing Case
Question: Our surgeon performed a percutaneous replacement of a gastrostomy tube. During the procedure, the surgeon needed to dilate the stenosed portion of the tract, but did not need endoscopic guidance. I’m unsure how to report this due to the complication mentioned. Florida Subscriber Answer: You have the choice between two CPT® codes that closely describe the procedure your surgeon performed. The code for an uncomplicated percutaneous gastrostomy tube replacement is 43762 (Replacement of gastrostomy tube, percutaneous, includes removal, when performed, without imaging or endoscopic guidance; not requiring revision of gastrostomy tract). But because you have documentation that the surgeon revised the gastrostomy tract during the procedure, you would instead report 43763 (… requiring revision of gastrostomy tract).
