Question: Our gastroenterologist performed an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (EGD), during which she had to administer Kenavac via intravenous injection to stimulate bile production. Can we report the Kenavac IV separately from the EGD? Answer: If the physician sees the need for Kenavac during an EGD, there are no additional billing possibilities because IVs to stimulate bile are bundled into the EGD codes. On your claim, you should report 43235 (Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy including esophagus, stomach, and either the duodenum and/or jejunum as appropriate; diagnostic, with or without collection of specimen[s] by brushing or washing [separate procedure]) if the gastroenterologist performed a diagnostic EGD.
