Infectious Pouchitis? Report 569.71 Plus Complication Code

Question: Notes indicate pouchitis. How should I report this? Should I consider another code if the pouchitis is infectious? North Carolina Subscriber Answer: ICD-9 569.71 (Pouchitis) covers standard cases of pouchitis. Pouchitis has been assigned this code since Oct. 1, 2009. However, report 569.71 and 997.4 (Digestive system complications not elsewhere classified) if the pouchitis is infectious. Pouchitis, which is characterized by inflammation of the mucosa of the small intestine, can occur after ileostomy or ileo-anal anastomosis procedures.
