Report V Codes for Patient's Long-Term Meds

Question: A patient reported to the ED due to effects from long-term current use of aspirin and steroids. How should I report the patient's diagnosis if I want to note the steroid and aspirin use in the medical record?

Missouri Subscriber Answer: You should report a pair of V codes to account for both of these conditions. Include the following ICD-9 codes on your claim:

 - V58.65 (Long-term [current] use of steroids) for the patient's steroid use.
 - V58.66 (Long-term [current] use of aspirin) for the patient's aspirin use.  Also, remember to report any specific signs or symptoms that prompted the visit.  -- Reader Questions and You Be the Coder reviewed by Michael A.
