ED Coding and Reimbursement Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Mind Location on Dental Blocks

Question: I received a denial for the following claim: Physician performs dental block on alveolar nerve. I reported 64402 and it was rejected. What code should I have chosen? Michigan Subscriber Answer: You should have reported 64400 (Injection, anesthetic agent; trigeminal nerve, any division or branch) for this dental block; 64402 (... facial nerve) was inaccurate. Why? The alveolar nerve is part of the mandibular nerve, which is a branch of the trigeminal nerve.
