ED Coding and Reimbursement Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Marshfield Auditor's Sheet Not a CMS Tool

Question: What exactly is the Marshfield Clinic Auditor's worksheet? I have heard that it is a way to help practices get better at evaluation and management coding, but I don't know much beyond that.

Answer: The Marshfield Clinic Auditor's Worksheet is a tool specifically developed to help clarify application of the medical decision-making (MDM) portion of the documentation guidelines for E/M services.

The worksheet is widely used but is not part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services documentation guidelines for E/M service. It is available to regional carriers, but they are not required to use this worksheet during audits. (There are no official national CMS interpretations on E/M documentation rules.)

Heads-up: Remember that the worksheet was developed for use in physician offices and does not neatly fit ED practices. Proceed with caution when using a Marshfield Clinic Auditor's Worksheet in the ED.
