Get Ready for PHE to End
Question: I read that there’s been another extension to the public health emergency (PHE) due to COVID-19, but I’ve also heard this might be the last one. Can you clear up when the PHE will actually end? AAPC Forum Subscriber Answer: It’s true that on Jan. 11, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) extended the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE). The Biden administration announced on Monday, Jan. 30 that the extension will last until May 11. The administration recognizes this kind of advance notice is necessary, as an abrupt end to the PHE would cause “wide-ranging chaos and uncertainty throughout the health care system,” said the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in a statement.
