Reader Question:

Use Specific Dx on Flu With GI Issues

Question: When the physician diagnoses a patient with influenza with gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations, do I need to report two ICD-10 codes: one for the influenza and one for the GI issues?

Answer: You’ll only need a single code, as ICD-10 provides codes for patients suffering influenza with GI manifestations. Before deciding on a code, however, you need to know which type of influenza the patient suffers from.

Go back and check the notes to see if there is any indication as to what type of influenza the patient suffers from. Then, choose one of the following diagnosis codes:

  • J09.X3 (Influenza due to identified novel influenza A virus with gastrointestinal manifestations)
  • J10.2 (Influenza due to other identified influenza virus with gastrointestinal manifestations)
  • J11.2 (Influenza due to unidentified influenza virus with gastrointestinal manifestations).
