Answer: To our knowledge, there are no state-specific certification programs. Most states recognize the national certifications of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The AAPC has an independent study program and study guides available. Certifications/credentials that can be earned are CPC (certified professional coder) and CPC-H (certified professional coderhospital). AAPC can be reached at 800-626-2633 or at its Web site at www.aapcnatl.org. AHIMA has a study guide and gives their coding specialist certification exam once a year in September.
Certifications/credentials that can be earned include RHIA (registered health information administrator), RHIT (registered health information technician), CCS (certified coding specialist) and CCS-P (certified coding specialistphysician-based).
