Reader Question:

Hematoma Blocks Included in Manipulation

Question: How should I bill for hematoma blocks? Is there a certain CPT series and is it considered a nerve block?

Pennsylvania Subscriber Answer: A hematoma block involves the injection of anesthetic into the fracture site to achieve pain control prior to a closed manipulation of the fracture. If the physician performs the closed manipulation, this type of block would likely be bundled with the fracture manipulation series.
