Reader Question:

Follow Procedure for Locum Tenens

Question: How should I bill for a locum tenens who has temporarily replaced a physician who was called for military duty? Will Champus pay the locum tenens for seeing Champus patients?

Arizona Subscriber Answer: Champus, which is a form of Tricare, requires that you add your locums Social Security number to your group. First, you need to contact Champus and find out if that locums Social Security number is in its database. If it is, then all you will need to do is fax them a very simple three-lined application with their licenses and ask them to add the locum. Expect Champus/Tricare to take about 30 days to complete the process. They will send you a letter telling you when it is all right to send in claims for that locum. You will need to hold those claims until they get this done. There may be regional variances.   Reader Questions and You Be the Coder reviewed by Mike Granovsky, MD, CPC.
