ED Coding and Reimbursement Alert

Reader Question:

Code EKG and Critical Care Together

Question: Can I report electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation in addition to critical care codes?

Rhode Island Subscriber Answer: Yes, you would be correct to report the EKG and critical care codes together. CPT specifically lists the following services that are bundled into the critical care codes (99291 and 99292):

interpretation of cardiac output measurements (93561, 93562)
chest x-rays (71010, 71015, 71020)
pulse oximetry (94760, 94761, 94762)
blood gases and information stored in computers
gastric intubation (43752, 91105)
temporary transcutaneous pacing (92953)
ventilatory management (94656, 94657, 94660, 94662)
vascular access procedures (36000, 36410, 36415, 36540, 36600).

While EKG information may be included in "information stored in computers," ECG interpretation is a separate service. You can report 93010 (Electrocardiogram, routine ECG with at least 12 leads; interpretation and report only) separately. Be sure to note that any procedures you bill aren't counted in the critical care time you report.
