Answer: No, use of the slit-lamp exam for eye injuries can not be coded separately, says Painter. The eye exam, including the slit-lamp, is considered comprehensive. When performed in the emergency department, the exam should be reported using the appropriate level of CPT E/M code (99281-99285, emergency services) and not the ophthalmologic codes.
