ED Coding and Reimbursement Alert

Reader Question:

Aircast

Question: Is an aircast coded the same as a splint?

Gloria Peterson
Aurora, Pa

Answer: If the aircast is placed for immobilization, there should be no problem using the splint code for the applicable body area (29125-29126 short arm, 29590 foot, or 29515 short leg), although some ED physicians treat an aircast as a strapping procedure (29540, strapping; ankle).

A patient can easily remove and reapply traditional splints. If the aircast can be removed and reapplied, it would be considered a splinting device rather than a cast; if used to immobilize, it can be either a splint or strap.
