Here's why you shouldn't code 30901 x 2. If your ED physician happens to perform anterior nosebleed repair on both of a patient's nostrils, report 30901 (Control nasal hemorrhage, anterior, simple [limited cautery and/or packing] any method) with modifier 50 (Bilateral procedure) appended, confirms Jeffrey Linzer Sr., MD, FAAP, FACEP, associate medical director for the compliance emergency pediatric group at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. ED coders should also observe the same bilateral coding rules for two-sided 30903 (Control nasal hemorrhage, anterior, complex [extensive cautery and/or packing] any method) encounters.
