ED Coding and Reimbursement Alert

Check Your States UPPL Laws

The following states have laws modeled on the Uniform Accident and Sickness Policy Provision Law (UPPL), a model law state insurance commissioners drafted in 1947. These laws may allow payers to deny reimbursement for patients injured under the influence of drugs or alcohol. (See "Sobering News: Strategies for Alcohol and Drug Intoxication" in article 6.) The state statute designation follows the state's name. Be sure to check with your state to ensure it has not amended or repealed the law during recent legislative sessions.
