Understand Dx Code for Left Heart Cath

Question: The patient had a left heart catheterization, and on the second post-op day, the cardiologist found a retroperitoneal bleed from the access site. This bleed required stenting of the right iliac. Which ICD-10-CM code should I report for this diagnosis?

Answer: If the patient has a postoperative hemorrhage from the access site after a cardiac catheterization you would code I97.610 (Postprocedural hemorrhage of a circulatory system organ or structure following a cardiac catheterization). You may also code the Z95.820 (Peripheral vascular angioplasty status with implants and grafts) for the right iliac stent.
