READER QUESTIONS:

Differentiate Between 93641/93642

Question: What is the difference between 93641 and 93642?

Michigan Subscriber
Answer: How you'll use these codes depends on time. For instance, the cardiologist performs the work reflected by the code 93641 (Electrophysiologic evaluation of single or dual chamber pacing cardioverter-defibrillator leads including defibrillation threshold evaluation [induction of arrhythmia, evaluation of sensing and pacing for arrhythmia termination] at time of initial implantation or replacement) at the time of the implant.

In contrast, the cardiologist will perform 93642 (Electrophysiologic evaluation of single or dual chamber pacing cardioverter-defibrillator [includes defibrillation threshold evaluation, induction of arrhythmia, evaluation of sensing and pacing for arrhythmia termination, and programming or reprogramming of sensing or therapeutic parameters]) at a later date.
