Reader Questions:

Code IABP for Hemodynamic Support

Question: Can I report an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) for hemodynamic support at the time of left heart cath? The cardiologist admitted the patient with unstable angina. He then performed a left heart cath but placed an IABP for hemodynamic support.

Vermont Subscriber Answer: Yes, you can report an IABP using code 33967 (Insertion of intra-aortic balloon assist device, percutaneous).

Keep in mind that few diagnoses will support the claim. CHF (congestive heart failure, 428.0) and cardiogenic shock (785.51) both support the IABP for the hemodynamic support at the time of the left heart cath. You may also try to submit the claim if the patient has unstable angina (411.1) or respiratory failure (518.81).
