Reader Question:

Report 93514 for Left Ventricular Punctures

Question: When should we report 93514? Code 93528 (Combined right heart catheterization with left ventricular puncture [with or without retrograde left heart catheterization]) seems always to be more appropriate for the service described. Am I missing something? Georgia Subscriber Answer: Most cardiologists rarely report 93514 (Left heart catheterization by left ventricular puncture). This code would be appropriate, for example, when the physician performs a left heart catheterization through a transthoracic approach. This approach might be appropriate for patients who have prosthetic mitral and aortic valves, preventing regular right and left heart cath approaches.
