Answer: The ICD-9 index entry for functional murmur is “omit code.” Consequently, you’ll have to look at other reasons for the visit to find a reportable code. If there isn’t a definitive diagnosis related to the encounter, see if there are signs and symptoms that brought the patient in. Or if the murmur was found during a physical or screening, there may be an encounter code that’s appropriate.
ICD-10: When ICD-10 becomes effective on Oct. 1, 2014, the new code set will offer a code for functional murmurs: R01.0, Benign and innocent cardiac murmurs.
