Cardiology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Direct Supervision for Tilt Table Tests

Question: The August 2004 edition of Cardiology Coding Alert ran a story about tilt table tests. What is the supervision requirement?

South Carolina Subscriber Answer: Tilt table tests call for direct supervision. If your cardiologist performs a tilt table test, he should be present in the office area and immediately available to furnish guidance or direction throughout the performance of the procedure.

CMS transmittal AB-03-035 changed this level from personal supervision, which requires the physician's presence in the room. However, if healthcare personnel perform this test in a hospital, you should check hospital policy in order to clarify which level of supervision they deem necessary. - You Be the Coder and Reader Questions were prepared with the assistance of Jim Collins, ACS-CA, CHCC, CPC, president of Compliant MD Inc. and compliance manager for several cardiology groups around the country; and reviewed by Jerome Williams Jr., MD, FACC, a cardiologist with Mid Carolina Cardiology in Charlotte, N.C.
