Answer: The correct code is I24.0 (Acute coronary thrombosis not resulting in myocardial infarction). This code applies whether documentation shows embolism, thrombosis, occlusion, or thromboembolism, according to notes with the code.
Note that there is an Excludes1 note with this code for atherosclerotic heart disease (I25.1-), so you should not report the embolism and any related heart disease coded to I25.1- together.
