Novitas Says CMS Has Delayed Implementation of Pacemaker NCD

Novitas Part A announced that CMS will delay implementation of the national coverage determination (NCD) 20.8.3, originally slated for implementation on July 7, 2014.

The NCD relates to coverage of pacemakers, single or dual chamber, for the treatment of non-reversible symptomatic bradycardia due to sinus node dysfunction and second and/or third degree atrioventricular block. Cardiology Coding Alert, vol. 17, no. 7, discussed the NCD (based on its original implementation date) in “Have You Mastered Using Modifier KX on Pacemaker Claims? July 7 Is Implementation Day.”

We’ll keep you posted on any updates to this announcement. Keep in mind that the effective date for the NCD was about a year ago on Aug. 13, 2013. The effective date is when the rule is effective, but payers don’t have to have systems in place to apply the rule until the implementation date.
