Check symbols, not definitions.
Determining why codes 33282 (Implantation of patient-activated cardiac event recorder) and 33284 (Removal of an implantable, patient-activated cardiac event recorder) are on CPT® 2014’s revised code list takes a little detective work.
The code definitions will be the same in 2014 as they are in 2013, but each code now carries the “moderate sedation” symbol. This symbol identifies codes that include moderate (conscious) sedation as part of the procedure.
Result: You should not report 99143-+99145 (Moderate sedation services [other than those services described by codes 00100-01999] provided by the same physician or other qualified health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports …) in conjunction with 33282 and 33284.
