Remember This About 0232T

Question: A surgeon requested that our anesthesiologist provide MAC during an elbow plasma injection for lateral epicondylitis. I think the correct surgical code is 0232T. How do I code the anesthesia?

Ohio Subscriber

Answer: The surgeon performs a platelet rich plasma injection under local anesthesia, which is included in code 0232T (Injection[s], platelet rich plasma, any site, including image guidance, harvesting and preparation when performed). If, however, the surgeon administered an elbow injection and the anesthesiologist provided MAC, you would submit unlisted code 01999 (Unlisted anesthesia procedure[s]).

Note: The current ASA Crosswalk does not list a corresponding anesthesia code for 0232T. Be sure to include the procedure report with your claim and be aware that some insurers might not reimburse for the service.
