Moderate Sedation for Epidural Cath Placement
Question: My anesthesiologist completed an epidural catheter implantation under moderate sedation and will be managing it for several days. How can we bill this service?
Answer: You have two code choices for the catheter placement, depending on where the anesthesiologist placed the epidural:
· 62318 – Injection(s), including indwelling catheter placement, continuous infusion or intermittent bolus, of diagnostic or therapeutic substance(s) (including anesthetic, antispasmodic, opioid, steroid, other solution), not including neurolytic substances, includes contrast for localization when performed, epidural or subarachnoid; cervical or thoracic
· 62319 – … lumbar or sacral (caudal).
Report each day of follow-up care with 01996 (Daily hospital management of epidural or subarachnoid continuous drug administration). Verify that you have thorough documentation to support billing the services as separate from any anesthesia care during a procedure.
