Is 01962 a Stand-Alone Code?

Question: Code 01962 (Anesthesia for urgent hysterectomy following delivery) isn't an add-on code. Should I simply report this, or should I also include the appropriate cesarean-section code?

Answer: Code 01962 (Anesthesia for urgent hysterectomy following delivery) is for an urgent hysterectomy after delivery, which most coding consultants believe implies a vaginal delivery.

If the patient underwent a planned cesarean section with hysterectomy, report 01963 (Anesthesia for cesarean hysterectomy without any labor analgesia/ anesthesia care). If the patient went into labor and then had the cesarean section and hysterectomy, report 01967 (Neuraxial labor analgesia/anesthesia for planned vaginal delivery [this includes any repeat subarachnoid needle placement and drug injection and/or any necessary replacement of an epidural catheter during labor]) and +01969 (Anesthesia for cesarean hysterectomy following neuraxial labor analgesia/ anesthesia [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure performed]). Divide the total time you report for the procedure by the minutes associated with 01967 and 01969.
