Choose This for EEG Anesthesia

Question: A patient had an EEG under general anesthesia due to behavioral issues and autism. I’m not sure what to use for the CPT® or ASA crosswalk code for this one. What do you recommend?

Answer: The CPT® code book does not include a code for anesthesia services during an EEG because most patients don’t need that level of care. Your best option is to submit code 01999 (Unlisted anesthesia procedure(s)). Include detailed documentation of the physician’s request for anesthesia and why it was medically necessary.

Any supporting diagnoses from the physician, such as F84.0 (Autistic disorder), are also recommended.
