Question: Is code 01964 only for spontaneous and induced abortions? I'm coding for a missed abortion and don't know whether to report 01964 or something else.

Answer: All CPT codes listed for abortion procedures cross to anesthesia code 01964 (Anesthesia for abortion procedures), with an alternative of 00940 (Anesthesia for vaginal procedures [including biopsy of labia, vagina, cervix or endometrium]; not otherwise specified). Report 01964 for any case related to treatment of "miscarriage," whether it is an induced, spontaneous or missed abortion.
