Urologist’s Code Helps You Choose Between 00910 and 00912

Question: I’m trying to code anesthesia for a urethrocystoscopy for fulguration of a bladder tumor. The code 00910 is for unspecified transurethral procedures, but 00912 is for transurethral resection of a bladder tumor. I can’t seem to find the appropriate code because fulguration is not the same as resection. Do you have some information on this matter?

Answer: The most appropriate anesthesia code will depend on the urologist’s code. When you check the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Crosswalk®, procedure 52214 (Cystourethroscopy, with fulguration [including cryosurgery or laser surgery] of trigone, bladder neck, prostatic fossa, urethra, or periurethral glands) crosses to anesthesia code 00910 (Anesthesia for transurethral procedures (including urethrocystoscopy); not otherwise specified), which carries 3 base units.

Procedure codes 52224-52240 (Cystourethroscopy, with fulguration (including cryosurgery or laser surgery) …) crosswalk to 00912 (… transurethral resection of bladder tumor(s)), which is 5 base units.
