READER QUESTIONS:

Sift Through Symphysis Pubis Injection Choices

Question: How should I code a symphysis pubis injection?

Oregon Subscriber

Answer: CPT Codes does not include a specific code for a symphysis pubis injection, so coders--and carriers--have different opinions on the best option.

Possibilities include a joint injection code such as 20600 (Arthrocentesis, aspiration and/or injection; small joint or bursa [e.g., fingers, toes]), a ligament injection code such as 20550 (Injection[s]; single tendon sheath, or ligament, aponeurosis [e.g., plantar “fascia”]), and a nerve injection code such as 64425 (Injection, anesthetic agent; ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric nerves) or 64450 (Injection, anesthetic agent; other peripheral nerve or branch).

Because of the many injection coding options for the various anatomic sites, clarify the specific site with your provider before submitting the claim.
