Anesthesia Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Regional Extremity Block = 01995

Question: What CPT code applies to a caudal block for postoperative pain management? The patient has reflex sympathetic dystropy (RSD).

Missouri Subscriber
Answer: This sounds similar to a Bier block, when the physician puts a cuff on the patient's extremity before administering large doses of anesthetic directly to the extremity for pain relief.

Submit the appropriate diagnosis from 337.2x (Reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and report 01995 (Regional intravenous administration of local anesthetic agent or other medication [upper or lower extremity]) for the regional extremity block.
