Question: Are we required to report an unlisted anesthesia code if the surgeon reports an unlisted surgical procedure? There is not a suggested code for anesthesia services in our crosswalk resource. Virginia Subscriber
Answer: No — the unlisted anesthesia code 01999 (Unlisted anesthesia procedure(s)) is rarely reported because anesthesia codes are reported using anatomical references. This means that even if the surgeon has an unlisted code, you will be able to crosswalk to the area of the body where the surgeon is working. For example, if the surgeon chooses an unlisted code, and the procedure is an arthroscopic procedure on the shoulder, the anesthesia code will correspond with a code from the shoulder and axilla section of CPT® (01610-01638).
