READER QUESTIONS:

Confirm Approach for Translaminar Epidural

Question: How should I code a translaminar epidural? Washington Subscriber         Answer: Verify with your provider whether he used an interlaminar epidural approach (between the lamina) or a transforaminal approach (through the foramen).       Look to epidural codes 62310 (Injection, single [not via indwelling catheter], not including neurolytic substances, with or without contrast [for either localization or epidurography], of diagnostic or therapeutic substance[s] [including anesthetic, antispasmodic, opioid, steroid, other solution], epidural or subarachnoid; cervical or thoracic) and 62311 (... lumbar, sacral [caudal]) to report a standard interlaminar epidural approach.       Choose from 64479-64484 (Injection, anesthetic agent and/or steroid, transforaminal epidural ...) for the transforaminal approach.
