Anesthesia Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Bill Spinal Block or Spinal and MAC?

Question: A physician performed a revision of the right hip. A spinal block was performed by our anesthesiologist. For type of anesthesia, a spinal and MAC with sedation was noted. Do I code the spinal block? Alabama Subscriber Answer: You should bill the procedure, not the anesthetic technique. A hip revision done under spinal is a hip revision billed the same as general. You should code 01215 no matter what anesthesia is used.
