Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

Aneurysm Coiling Codes Can Vary

Question: What is the correct anesthesia code for aneurysm coiling?

Texas Subscriber
Answer: Aneurysm coiling is a fairly new procedure, which means coders have different opinions on how to correctly report it.

Some coders use 00210 (Anesthesia for intracranial procedures; not otherwise specified) because it is a surgical procedure. Others report 01922 (Anesthesia for non-invasive imaging or radiation therapy) or 01926 (Anesthesia for therapeutic interventional radiologic procedures involving the arterial system; intracranial, intracardiac, or aortic) because it is a radiologic procedure. The American Society of Anesthesiologists and American Medical Society both recommend reporting 01926 for aneurysm coiling, but ask your carrier for its preferred billing method.
