Question: Can I bill ventilation management codes along with subsequent visit codes for ICU patients?

Answer: No. The codes for vent management 94656 (ventilation assist and management, initiation of pressure or volume preset ventilators for assisted or controlled breathing; first day) and 94657 ( subsequent days) were bundled into inpatient care codes beginning in 2001. HCFA no longer views them as distinct services. Because Medicare policies often influence private payers, many other carriers consider the services bundled as well.
