Reader Question:

Use 'Other' Code 64450 for Saphenous Nerve Block

Question:  The physician administered a sciatic nerve block to the thigh and a saphenous nerve block to the mid-thigh. Everything took place during the same encounter. What would be the proper way to submit this claim?

Answer:  You’ll need two codes for this encounter. Report the sciatic nerve block with 64445 (Injection, anesthetic agent; sciatic nerve, single) and 64450 (… other peripheral nerve or branch) for the saphenous block to the mid-thigh. The documentation should support this by noting the different injection sites.
