Reader Question:

Surgical Method Determines Spine Biopsy Code

Question: What CPT® code should I submit for a biopsy of the sacral spine?

Florida Subscriber

Answer: Clarify the procedure performed before submitting your claim because biopsy of the spine is not the same as biopsy of the spinal cord.

Depending on the surgical procedure, your anesthesia options could include 00600 (Anesthesia for procedures on cervical spine and cord; not otherwise specified), 00620 (Anesthesia for procedures on thoracic spine and cord; not otherwise specified) or 00630 (Anesthesia for procedures in lumbar region; not otherwise specified).

Even 01112 (Anesthesia for bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy, anterior or posterior iliac crest) might apply, depending on the situation. Carefully check the operative report to ensure you cross to the appropriate anesthesia code.
