Question: What anesthesia code would you recommend for removal of hardware from the humeral shaft? We usually start with the surgical CPT® code and use the ASA Crosswalk to arrive at the anesthesia code. The surgical code is 20680, and if using the Crosswalk, the only anesthesia code that would come close to the humeral shaft would be 01630. I’m not sure this is really correct. What do you recommend?

Answer: The ASA Crosswalk is correct. Code 01630 (Anesthesia for open or surgical arthroscopic procedures on humeral head and neck, sternoclavicular joint, acromioclavicular joint, and shoulder joint; not otherwise specified) is the correct anesthesia code for 20680 (Removal of implant; deep [e.g., buried wire, pin, screw, metal band, nail, rod or plate]). Code 01630 is a 5 base unit code.
Explanation: Remember, the shoulder is made up of three bones: the humerus (upper arm bone), the scapula (the shoulder blade), and the clavicle (the collarbone). During procedures represented by 01630, the anesthesia provider induces the patient and monitors the patient during the procedure to the humeral head and neck, sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, and shoulder joints that a surgeon performs.
