Reader Question:

Sterilization Coding Depends on Delivery

Question: How should I code an elective sterilization after a delivery? California Subscriber Answer: Code sterilization following vaginal delivery with 00851 (Anesthesia for intraperitoneal procedures in lower abdomen including laparoscopy; tubal ligation/ transection). Include the appropriate ICD-9 code, such as V25.2 (Encounter for contraceptive management; sterilization). You cannot separately bill tubal sterilization with a c-section, although you do include the time associated with the sterilization in the anesthesiologist's final bill.
