Reader Question:

Report O34.219 for Repeat C-section

Question: A patient had a repeat Cesarean section due to pre-eclampsia. What is the correct diagnosis code for abdominal hemorrhage during a repeat C-section?

Nebraska Subscriber

Answer: As this is a repeat C-section, you should report O34.219 (Maternal care for unspecified type scar from previous cesarean delivery). It is not necessary for the anesthesia provider to report the abdominal hemorrhage that occurred during the C-section, although the surgeon may want to report. If you would like to add an appropriate ICD-10 code for abdominal hemorrhage that occurred during a repeat C-section, O99.89 (Other specified diseases and conditions complicating pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium) best describes this circumstance.
