Prostate Biopsy 55700 Crosses to Anesthesia Code 00902

Question: What is the correct anesthesia code used for a prostate biopsy? I have been using 00400, but noticed in a coding program that 00902 was being instead. When did this change?

Answer: The procedure code 55700 (Biopsy, prostate; needle or punch, single or multiple, any approach) crosses to anesthesia code 00902 (Anesthesia for; anorectal procedure), which carries 5 base value units. There are two alternate options, 00400 (Anesthesia for procedures on the integumentary system on the extremities, anterior trunk and perineum; not otherwise specified), which carries 3 base value units and 00910 (Anesthesia for transurethral procedures {including urethrocystoscopy}; not otherwise specified), which carries 3 base value units. Your anesthesia code will depend on the approach used. For example, if the biopsy was performed with a rectal approach, the correct anesthesia code is 00902. If you are uncertain of the approach, query the anesthesia provider or review the operative report to obtain the details necessary to obtain the accurate anesthesia code.
